Government Essay -- essays research papers
Governments Today Should governments today play a greater role in the operation of their economies? In a perfect world everyone would have a job, and would have all which they need to live, however, this is not always the case. Poorer countries may not have the necessary productivity to sustain their economies, working conditions may be awful, or sometimes people may not even have the right to own and operate their own business. This situation is probably caused from too much government intervention. On the other hand, if there is too little government intervention the workers rights could be exploited in order for the industry owners to make more profit. In order for a nationââ¬â¢s economy to be successful, that nation must have high productivity, rights for all of its population, and a high standard of living. This can be achieved through some government regulation and the successful use of some points of the market economy system. Some countries that have, or had, a failing economy used centrall y planned economic ideologies. The Soviet Union is a good example of a country that has used centrally planned economic ideas and that has had their economy fail. The failure of the Soviet Unionââ¬â¢s economy was the effect of no substantial change in the way the economy was run in over 60 years. In 1928, Stalin wanted to improve the countryââ¬â¢s economy by increasing its industrialization. In order for increased industrialization, an increase of productivity was in need. The first five-year plan Stalin implemented drastically increased the USSRââ¬â¢s production of steel, electric power, machinery, and new industries. However, peasants, who were once farmers and now worked in factories, were frustrated since they were not prepared for their new way of life. These peasants were forced to work in the factories since new machinery had replaced them on the farms were they once worked. However, the new machinery helped to increase agricultural production since they were more ef ficient and effective. The larger collective farms that could afford the modern machinery were urged to act against the kulaks (rich peasant farmers). The kulaks refused to sell their excess grain were forced to hand over their land to the government. Most of them burned their crops, killed their livestock, and destroyed the machinery in attempts to defy the government. The kulaks caused famine to sweep over th... ... conditions, because factory owners did not regard the safety of their workers, many workers often died because of their jobs, or suffered great injuries that would not able them to work at all. The Soviet Unionsââ¬â¢ economic collapse and the Industrial Revolution workers working conditions tell us that a mixed economic system is the best choice for todayââ¬â¢s countries. This is because with out government control in the economy workers can be exploited with out any regard for their safety or well being. However, in an economy, where there is total government control the workers may lose initiative to work and the economy may collapse. The best examples of a stable economy that protects the rights of the people are the United States and Canada. This is because their productivity increases as their population increases, and the workers do not face horrible working conditions. Also, Canada and the United States enjoy a high standard of living, and people can enjoy the freed om to operate their own private businesses. Simply government control is necessary to protect the rights of people, but some points of the capitalist economic system are necessary to take care of the consumerââ¬â¢s needs.

Business Economics – Regression Analysis
Effect of Ratio Profitability: Return on Asset (ROA) and Return of Equity (ROE) to Stock Price of PT Bank Central Asia (BCA) Tbk. Ratio profitability, Return on Asset (ROA) and Return of Equity (ROE), of a firm is used as one of parameters for investor to decide whether they want to invest or not. The following table consists of ROA and ROE as well as the stock price of PT Bank Central Asia (BCA) Tbk. , as one of the largest bank in Indonesia, from year of 2002 up to 2011. Table 1. ROA, ROE and stock price of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk. tahun 2002-2011 Year| Stock Price(Y)| ROA(X2)| ROE(X2)| 2002| 2500| 2. 17| 22. 08| 003| 3325| 2. 36| 24. 87| 2004| 2975| 3. 04| 32. 52| 2005| 3400| 3. 41| 32. 33| 2006| 5200| 3. 43| 33. 58| 2007| 7300| 1. 68| 16. 47| 2008| 5778| 3. 14| 33. 16| 2009| 5645| 3. 17| 32. 11| 2010| 4284| 3. 28| 31. 23| 2011| 3674| 2. 65| 24. 16| Using regression analysis we want to determine the relationship between ROA, ROE and stock price of PT BCA Tbk. In this case, ROA an d ROE are the independent or explanatory variable (X), while stock price is the dependent variable that we want to explain (Y). Regression Analysis SUMMARY OUTPUT| | | Regression Statistics| Multiple R| 0. 13028475| R Square| 0. 016974116| Adjusted R Square| -0. 63890422| Standard Error| 1710. 529517| Observations| 10| ANOVA| | | | | | | df| SS| MS| F| Significance F| Regression| 2| 353656. 3| 176828. 15| 0. 060435241| 0. 941840446| Residual| 7| 20481378. 6| 2925911. 229| | | Total| 9| 20835034. 9| | | | | Coefficients| Standard Error| t Stat| P-value| Lower 95%| Upper 95%| Lower 95. 0%| Upper 95. 0%| Intercept| 5361. 609293| 2796. 526605| 1. 917238793| 0. 096721961| -1251. 125335| 11974. 34392| -1251. 125335| 11974. 34392| X Variable 1| -142. 3275587| 3749. 125063| -0. 037962873| 0. 970777259| -9007. 599603| 8722. 944486| -9007. 599603| 8722. 944486| X Variable 2| -19. 7879081| 375. 1702777| -0. 051919867| 0. 960043105| -906. 6155278| 867. 6579462| -906. 6155278| 867. 6579462| From the summary output we can estimate the linear relationship between the stock price (Y) and ROA (X1), ROE (X2) in the form of equation below: Y= 5361. 6092 ââ¬â 142. 3275 X1 ââ¬â 19. 4788 X2 The result indicates that for each 1% decrease in ROA and ROE; the stock price decrease by IDR142. 3275 (the estimated coefficient of X1) and IDR19. 4788 (the estimated coefficient of X2) also, respectively. To understand how significant the independent variable can explain the dependent variable, we can observe from t-stat data. The critical value of t at the 0. 05 level of significance is 2. 365 (from table of the t distribution). The analysis result show that t-stat value below the critical value of t = 2. 365. It means that at the 5% level of significance, we accept there is no significant relationship between ROA, ROE and stock price. We need more variable better than just ROA and ROE to picture the movement of price stock. The two variables, ROA and ROE, are not enough to explain th e stock price of PT BCA Tbk. Now, we want to see how good is the model or how much the explanatory power of the model by looking at R2 data.R2 measures how much of the variation in the firmââ¬â¢s stock price is explained by the variation in its ROA and ROE. The analysis result shows that the value of R2 is 0. 016974116, extreme to 1. It means that none of the variation in stock price was explained by the variation in ROA and ROE. In conclusion, looking at the value of t-stat and R2, variable ROA and ROE is not enough to explain the movement of stock price PT BCA Tbk. We need to add more variables to get more description how the stock price change and how significant and sensitive the variables impact to stock price.

What makes a good teacher
Teachers play a crucial role in the continues growth of society. The goal of every teacher is to pass his/her teachings to his/her students for their personal benefit. As a student I was assigned the task of analyzing and defining the differences of a teacher and a good one, comparing the virtues of a good teacher with many others things, and making clear what a good teacher is not. In order to understand what a good teacher is, first we need to analyze what is a teacher. A teacher is an individual who can be either male or female. A teacher is an adult who has mental ability. Teachers are individuals who have educated and prepared themselves such as going through a university degree, plus two years teachers college. Now, who is a great teacher? Being a good teacher does not ensure his or her to be a good one. Good teachers need to be wise people with enough experience and knowledge. Also, good teachers are patients and humorous with the main purpose that their teachings are easily understood by their students. Good teachers are sociable individuals who can interact with all their students in order to understand and respect their students` opinion. Good teachers could be compared with many things in this world. Good teachers are physiologists, as they are able to deduce their studentsââ¬â¢ problems. Good teachers are similar to parents given that they play a role model for students to become very successful in their future life. Good teachers are a great source of knowledge and experience. Good teachers are as coaches given that they encourage their students to achieve what they really want. In addition, good teachers can be considered as an encyclopedia because they have a broad knowledge, which they transmit to their students. By defining, what a good teacher is not, improve the understanding of a good teacher. Good teachers are not individuals who are only interested in making money because their commitment is to play an important role model for students. Good teachers are not magician; they cannot do miracles to incentive the students to study as the result depends on how eager the students have to meet their goals. In addition, good teachers are not robots because they also can get tired and have problems as students do. In conclusion, there are many differences between a teacher and a good one. However, the major task of a good teacher is to guide their students through the right path in order to make the students become successful in their future life. What Makes a Good Teacher What Makes a Good teacher? To teach or not to teach that is the question Teacher is not only a person, who should teach, it is a person who must lead the pupil on the way to the knowledge. Teacher shows the world and explain the laws of this world. He is often a tutor, a preceptor, a person that you respect. This profession is very hard and important. But, what makes a good teacher? There are many things which make a teacher great and they all can`t be defined. However i`ve always considered several of them essential. In my opinion a good teacher is someonewho first of all creates interest in studying, doesn`t underestimate the children, has equal expectations of siccess from everyone and last but not least likes his job. A good teavher always has a sense of purpose. He chooses very carefully the teaching programme and adjusts it to the needs of his students. Children always come first and that`s why the decision he makes are based on how they will affect them. He shares experience with other teachers and thus is always learning new things. It is very important for a teacher to be a good communicator. my mind, teacher is at first a man, a person and if he is a difficult person with inner problems, with bad character ââ¬â he canââ¬â¢t be really good teacher because teacher works with people, not with machines. He should know how to socialize, how to help others. Good teacher must understand their pupils, their feelings. Teacherââ¬â¢s purpose is giving knowledge, but people donââ¬â¢t take knowledge easily, they want to convince themselves in necessity and importance of this information.Good teacher can make so that pupils let pass the studies throw their hearts. Most of all, it is very important for teacher to love his subject. His mood, opinion irrationally hands on his pupils. If person love something ââ¬â his feelings, his example will be better than any words. So, what makes a good teacher? I think, a good teacher is a vocation, a gift of God bec ause sometimes a person have excellent qualities, wonderful character, loves his subject, but we canââ¬â¢t say that he is really good teacher. To be a good teacher is a talent and a miracle. What Makes a Good Teacher A person may be blessed with natural abilities, but through human nature, we desire personal connection and motivation. The movie Stand and Deliver told the story of a high school class that fell short of academic requirements. Jamie Escalante was a new, influential teacher who made an impact on inner city students by simply demonstrating interest and faith. Jamie showed attention to the students outside of the classroom and did not give them the opportunity to make excuses. Mr. Escalante cleverly manipulated his students into success with various techniques, a majority of which would help me thrive in math class.Angel was a student, first introduced as a trouble maker. As the audience realizes that there is more to Angel than his tough guy routine, so does Mr. Escalante. He is a compassionate grandson, taking care of his sickly grandmother. Angel showed up to Mr. Escalanteââ¬â¢s house on Christmas Eve with his grandma, and although it was an act of resentment, they were welcomed in for dinner. Personally, when I was younger my grandpa was very sick; I would spend nights in the hospital with him and my family unable to complete homework assignments which ultimately set me behind in classes. However, like Mr. Escalante, my teachers understood that my life did not always revolve around the classroom. I had other responsibilities and worries on my mind. However, Mr. Escalante also did not allow his students to let their worried minds become excuses for their lack of success or sloppy work ethic. All Mr. Escalante asked of his students was ââ¬Ëganasââ¬â¢ or the desire to learn. He held them to a higher standard than they ever had been before which motivates me well because it gives me something to prove.I want to join the Navy after high school and a friend of my sisterââ¬â¢s said that I do not have the desire for it. After I heard that, I became more encouraged than ever. Also no excuses were tolerated in his classroom which I believe is a fantastic tac tic. Students know exactly how to manipulate teachers, whether there is a sincere justification for something or just an excuse. When Angel is late to class, Mr. Escalante kicks him out, since his tardiness shows that Angel does not see the value in learning.Later, Angel again comes into class tardy, this time after being with his grandmother in the hospital. Although Angelââ¬â¢s excuse is genuine, Mr. Escalante does not accept it and asks Angel to leave. It is this attitude that inspires the students to attend class regularly and on time. In life, excuses get you nowhere except back where you started. Teachers who do not accept excuses are the ones who care about you enough to get you ready for the real world. Mr. Escalante was very successful. He started with a class of students who did not care about grades or math at all. However, through his tactics, within a few years, those same students passed the advanced placement calculus final. Mr. Brechlin, I will do better in math an d school in general if I am forced to be all I can be just as Jamieââ¬â¢s students were. I am a slackerâ⬠¦ and need to be pushed! Like Angel I do have personal and family issues and need help and guidance at times. However, as Mr. Escalante put it, when Iââ¬â¢m getting hired for a job they will not want to hear my problems. In the real world, there are no such things as excuses, only my work ethic and ability to succeed.

Nuclear Arms Race essays
Nuclear Arms Race essays In order to maintain peace and stability in the world, there must be a balance of power between countries. The Nuclear Arms Race was started because there wasn't a balance of power after World War II. The U.S. was the only country at that time which possessed nuclear weapons. Russia, fearing a United States domination of world power, developed a nuclear bomb of its own. Thus started the Arms Race, in which both countries attempted to gain the upper hand in terms of the number of nuclear warheads each possessed. However, the Arms Race ended when several treaties in arms reduction were passed. I believe that in the end, the United States and the Soviet Union realized that one country would eventually win, and the balance of power would again be shifted. Fearing a nuclear war, arms negotiations began in an attempt to lessen the tension. This is evident in the fact that treaties between the two countries were signed, agreeing on the limitation and testing of nuclear arms. It is also illustrated in the Cuban Missile Crisis, where Russia agreed to withdraw the missiles placed in Cuba, fearing U.S. retaliation. In order to better understand the Arms Race, a brief history must be given. The Arms Race probably began in August of 1949, when Russia detonated its own nuclear weapon, thus ending the U.S. monopoly. In response, President Truman ordered the development of the hydrogen bomb in January of 1950. However, the Soviet Union made the first H-bomb in August of 1953. Then, the race escalated when the Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile was developed in the summer of 1957, again by the Soviets. A serious crisis arose in 1962, when the Soviets placed ballistic missiles in Cuba, their new ally. The missiles were withdrawn when the U.S. threatened nuclear retaliation. In return, President Kennedy's promised not to invade Cuba. The world had never come closer to a nuclear war. Negotiations, beginning with the establishme...

Learning Styles Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Learning Styles - Coursework Example However learning styles have been criticized stating that in achieving goals and learnerââ¬â¢s motivation, teaching or learning based on learning styles have very little impact and does not play a significant role and might typecast the learners (Coffield et al, 2004). Using the Learning style inventory assessment questionnaire (Honey and Mumford, 1992), I learnt that my preferred way of learning or learning style is reflector. In the present paper a critical reflection of the identified learning style in the context of three personal development goals is analysed along with the critical evaluation of the internal and external factors contributing to the attainment of my personal development goals and at the end learning developmental plan is giving on SMART principles. Critical Analysis of Reflector Learning Style Kolb (1984, p.38) who developed learning cycle defined ââ¬Å"Learning as the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experienceâ⬠. Base d on Kolbââ¬â¢s (1984) learning cycle, Honey and Mumford (1992) developed the ââ¬Ëlearning styles inventoryââ¬â¢, and according to Honey and Mumford (1992, p.1) ââ¬Å"the term learning styles is used as a description of the attitudes and behaviours which determine an individualââ¬â¢s preferred way of learningâ⬠and no learning style is superior to that of another. The below figure gives the four learning styles developed by Honey and Mumford (1992), where they said that people either learn through teaching or experience and explained four learning stages and suggested that a person may start learning at any of the stages illustrated below. Figure 1: Honey and Mumford: Typology of Learners (Honey and Mumford, 1992) Honey and Mumford (1992), state that a reflector collects information and evaluates it before coming to a conclusion. Reflectors until and unless are sure about the conclusion does not give their opinion or judgement as they are very cautious and thoughtf ul. Reflectors favour intellectual activities, situations that are passive, for participative activity need substantial briefing beforehand, preparation time, thorough research, learning situations that are structured and do not favour pressure or time limits. They do not cope up well with lack of adequate information and well laid instructions, spontaneous thinking and time bound activities (UMIST, 2003 and University of Southampton, 2003). My main personal goal is to become a Diplomat and a good martial arts teacher because I am interested in diplomatic service and learning martial arts from a long time and want to impart the knowledge to others and popularize the art form, other than that I want to score good grades in the Business Management course, the below analysis examines whether my learning style helps in achieving these goals. A critical reflection of the identified learning style-Reflector in the context of three personal development goals. Basing on the principles of C- SMART goal setting that stands for the goals that are Challenging, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely (Life Rocks, 2007; ECU, 2010; University of Ballarat, 2012) I have set my goals as follows. I want to become a Diplomat and a Capoeira martial arts teacher ââ¬â an Afro-Brazilian martial art combined with dance but before that I want to secure good grades in the Business management course ending May 2014. I want to secure A+ grade in the course, meanwhile work part time as a Capoeira martia

Art Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Art - Essay Example He was also heavily influenced by the Post-Impressionists Gauguin and Van Gogh. Picasso was a Spanish artist known as the founder of Cubism. Unlike Matisse, Picassoââ¬â¢s paintings of women are grotesquely distorted. He portrays the woman with darkness and vulgarity. In the early years of the twentieth century, Picasso embarked on a series of paintings using blue palette and melancholy themes. After his Blue Period, came his Rose Period which emphasized a warmer palette and more cheerful themes. Picassoââ¬â¢s works were influenced by Matisseââ¬â¢s works especially with his still life paintings. However, Picasso focused more on form and innovation while Matisse focused more on color and was less abstract. Picasso uses form with symmetry at different angels, geometrics and inspiration from household tools. On the other hand, Matisse always preferred bright colors even in his landscapes. His colors changes from light to dark but its mixtures make it even more creative. Matisse does not have much attention to detail but he adheres to reality unlike Picasso who would usually distort the images of his subjects. The art works of both artists were influenced by each other, more so when they developed a friendly rivalry. One of the more famous works of Picasso is the ââ¬Å"Les Demoiselles dââ¬â¢Avignonâ⬠which is an example of his neo-cubism, modernism, and impressionism. This painting shows women who are immensely distorted. Geometric shapes are used instead of curves to portray the bodies of the women. The painting uses dark colors such as brown, black and blue which makes the theme gloomy. Matisseââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Joy of Lifeâ⬠on the other hand depicts women more naturally by showing the right curves and proportions. The mood of Matisseââ¬â¢s painting is livelier because of the colors that he used specifically, red, green and yellow. Although both paintings show a group of women, one can clearly see the difference in how they are portrayed b y both artists. Matisseââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Joy of Lifeâ⬠, 1905-1906 vs. Picassoââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Les Demoiselles dââ¬â¢Avignonâ⬠, 1907 Picassoââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Vase, bowl & lemonâ⬠, 1907 vs. Matisseââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Blue Pot and Lemonâ⬠, 1897 The paintings above are examples of still life paintings of Picasso and Matisse. Unlike other Matisseââ¬â¢s paintings, the colors are quite dull. In contrast, Picassoââ¬â¢s emphasizes the shapes of the objects by using black outlines on the figures. His colors are darker as compared to those of Matisseââ¬â¢s. In Matisseââ¬â¢s painting, the objects seem to blend with its background because of its complimentary colors while in Picassoââ¬â¢s painting, the dark blue and gray background shows a sharp contrast between the colors of the lemon and the vase. Picassoââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Acrobatâ⬠1930 vs. Matisseââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Acrobatsâ⬠1952 The above paintings of both Picasso and Matisse show clearly how they in fluenced each other. The paintings show the different interpretations of the two artists on one subject. Again, we can see Matisseââ¬â¢s love for colors by painting the human body blue in a beige background. On the other hand, Picasso simply used black and white. The two paintings though, both show a distortion of the human body. Works Cited Carver, Reg. Matisse or Picasso. 11 February 2011.
